I always use a fine wire mesh to block off any openings in my home. Whether it be eaves or even just a gap around an electrical line. I have used fine wire mesh to block out everything from Carpenter Bees to rats - and generally - this works every time. I have used stainless steel and copper as well: www.bwire.com
