Pest control for carpenter ants involves removing wood decay, using insecticide baits to eliminate the colony, applying perimeter insecticides, using insecticidal dusts and foams in wall voids, or natural remedies like diatomaceous earth. For significant infestations, it is best to hire a licensed pest control professional.

Identify and Eliminate the Source:
Remove wood decay: Carpenter ants nest in wood, so remove any wet, decaying wood, woodpiles, or rotted siding from around your home.
Repair moisture issues: Fix leaks and reduce moisture, as damp wood attracts carpenter ants.

Chemical Control Methods:
Baiting:
Use slow-acting carbohydrate or protein-based baits that worker ants carry back to the nest to kill the queen and colony. Place baits near ant trails, but avoid using them near food.
Perimeter Treatments:
Apply non-repellent insecticides, such as Termidor or Phantom, as a barrier around the structure, paying attention to entry points and areas where wood contacts the ground.
Dusts and Foams:
Use insecticidal dusts or non-repellent foams, like Alpine Foam, to treat ant nests in wall voids and other hidden areas.
Find the nest:
The most effective control involves locating and destroying the nest, often by injecting dust or foam directly into wall voids.

Natural Control Methods:
Diatomaceous Earth: Apply food-grade diatomaceous earth to cracks and crevices. It kills ants by damaging their exoskeletons.

When to Call a Professional:
Large or persistent infestations: If the infestation is severe or you cannot locate the nest, contact a licensed pest control professional for treatment. They can apply products like Fipronil, which are highly effective but may require licensing.
